He was born on March 1, 1919 in Newton, Utah to James Sands and Mabel Benson Hancey. He married his sweetheart Norene Sarah Potts on February 21, 1942 and later was sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on April 21, 1963. He and Norene lived in Salt Lake City and raised 6 sons, Ronald (Helen), Dennis (Phyllis), Gary (Linda), David (Charlotte), Kevin (Nadine) and Rick. They have 21 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild all of whom he loved and adored.
Earl was a master carpenter and spent 40 years working for ZCMI in their carpentry shop. He had a strong testimony and love for and of his Heavenly Father and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served in many callings. He has left a remarkable legacy for all of his adoring family.
Earl is preceded in death by his parents (James and Mabel), his 2 brothers Arthur and Dennis and 3 sisters Opal Clarke (Oswell), Lorus Jenkins (Ross), and Hazel Pedersen (Rande).
He is survived by his wife, 6 sons, 21 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, his brother Orlo (Iris), 2 sisters Melba Buttars (Clair) and Mozelle Oja (Owen), brother-in-law Jack Potts and sister-in-law Dorthy Taylor (Fred).
Funeral Services were held on Saturday February 4, 2012 at 12:00pm at the Winder Stake Center on 1250 East 4530 South Holladay, Utah. A viewing preceded the funeral at 10:15 to 11:45am. Interment, Elysian Burial Gardens.
