Hyndman, PA — Merle M. "Herk" Miller, 74, of LaVale, MD, formerly of Hyndman, Pa., passed away Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at Select Specialty Hospital, Latrobe, Pa. Born Sept. 24, 1934, in Castle Shannon, Pa., he was a son of the late Maylon M. Sr. and Belvia A. (Davis) Miller. He is also preceded in death by brothers Malvern M., Melford M., Melvin M., Marvin M. and Maylon M. Jr. and sisters, Wavie O. Bloomquist, Bricy O. Albright, Emma V. Beals, Wanda R. Miller and Sara A. Miller. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Shirley James Miller, of Cumberland; one son Merle "Mark" Miller and wife Julie Shaffer Miller, and two special grandkids, Katelyn Miller and Mckenzie Miller, of Hyndman, Pa.; along with one brother, Melvin M. Miller and wife Georgette, of Baltimore; special great-nephew Russell McConville and wife Chirl, and their sons; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Herk was an excellent fastpitch softball player for the Stringtown Fast Pitch League when he was younger. He worked construction for the Local 616. He also loved to go hunting, fishing and growing a garden. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Select Specialty Hospital for the good care. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Inc., 169 Clarence St, Hyndman, Pa. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Lance Tucker officiating. Burial will take place at the Palo Alto Hilltop Cemetery.
