Dorothy D. Burd, 105 years of age, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, Nebraska. Dorothy was born on March 27, 1915, the fifth of seven children to Alfred Ernest and Cathryn Ann (Sonday) Calkins. She attended District #9 country school in Norton County, Kansas, and then attended and graduated from Norton Community High School with the class of 1933.

On October 17, 1936, Dorothy was united in marriage to Phillip O. Burd in Norton and to this union one child was born, Trudi in 1938. The family lived in Norton, Alma, Culbertson and Denver, each for a short time, before the family made their home in Orleans in July of 1945. Dorothy was a bookkeeper at the cheese plant in Culbertson.

Dorothy was involved in the Orleans Presbyterian Church, serving as Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, Deacon, Elder, and in the United Presbyterian Women. She was a Girl Scout leader, past president of her PEO chapter and served on the Orleans library board and election boards.

After Phillip retired, they enjoyed traveling, spending the winters in Texas and together they met their goal of visiting all 50 states.

While Dorothy was in school, she whistled for talent shows and as entertainment for the community. She would whistle bird calls for several different species. Dorothy had many hobbies: riding horses, fishing, hunting pheasants, and whittling. She was an incredible cook, grinding her own wheat to make bread. Dorothy was a wonderful seamstress making all of Trudi’s dresses including her wedding dress.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Phillip in 2000; four sisters: Maurine Fisher (Elmer), Gertrude Ward (Thomas), Genevieve Brower (Lane), and Elnor Chambers; two brothers, Wayne Calkins and Wilton “Bill” Calkins (Edith); one grandson-in-law, Greg Efta.

Dorothy leaves to celebrate her life, her daughter, Trudi George of Orleans; four grandchildren, Kern Porter (Darcie) of Orleans, Penny Lingg of Oxford, Traci Dietz of Orleans, Heidi Efta of Longwood, Florida, who were joined in 1987 by Kenneth George (Verlene) of Amarillo, Texas, Linda Overfors (Greg) of Topeka, Kansas and Sue Barnes (Derbin) of Phillipsburg, Kansas, 16 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
