Eli enlisted as a private in E Company, 12th North Carolina
Infantry. He was 37 years old and a resident of Cleveland County, North Carolina. He mustered into service on April 22, 1861. He was wounded on October 19, 1864 at Cedar Creek, Virginia and his left leg was amputated. He was hospitalized in Baltimore, Maryland and on October 29, 1864 he was confined as a prisoner at Point Lookout, Maryland. He was paroled on November 13, 1864 and transferred to Venus Point, Georgia where he was exchanged on November 15, 1864.
