History and Genealogy of Rodman Family - author unknown

James Rodman is listed as the fourth son of Hugh Rodman Sr.

James Rodman, son of Hugh Rodman Sr. born in 1785 came to Shelby County, Kentucky about 1813 and settled about five miles east of Salem in Washington County, Indiana. He was born in Pennsylvania and was married to Elizabeth Burton. She evidently died before he did as she is not named in his will dated May 19, 1852. Children of James and Elizabeth as follows:

1. John F. Rodman, born April 5, 1829,; died November 30, 1908. Married January 19, 1860 to Mary a Wilson; she died nearly 37 years before her husband. John married second wife Louisa Fisher, buried in Franklin Cemetery, Franklin Township.

2. Thomas Jefferson (should be Jackson) Rodman, born July 30, 1815 near Salem, Indiana. He died July 7, 1871. His wife was Martha Black whom he married while attending West Point Military Academy. They had one son, John Rodman of the U. S. Navy. Thomas J. Rodman was inventor of the Rodman Gun, used by our country during the Civil War and many years afterwards as well as being used in other countries. (Note: This was actually Thomas Jackson Rodman, born 31 July 1816. There is confusion in some records as to his middle name. A letter from his daughter to the administration at West Point clarified the point.)

3. James Harvey Rodman, married March 9, 1845, Washington County, Indiana to Rachel J. Norris. He was an extensive land owner.

Children: Albert A. Rodman (foster son) married first Cora B. Snyder who died July 8, 1885. One son born to them died August 7, 1885, age one month, 18 days; both buried in Conoway Cemetery, Franklin Township. Albert A. married second time to Hanna Payne; children: Harvey, Glenn, Verne, and Etta.

4. Walker B. Rodman, born October 26, 1810; died January 31, 1872, Washington County, Indiana; married October 8, 1831 to Lucinda Norris, born July 7, 1815; died February 2, 1872. She survived her husband by 34 hours. Both buried in common grave in Franklin Church Cemetery.

5. William H. Rodman, named in will of his father. Several men of that name married in Wa shington County, Indiana. No data as to which is this one.

6. Nancy Rodman; she married as second wife to Caleb A. Paynter who is buried in Paynter Cemetery, Washington Township.
