He was born on March 17, 1917, in Dale, NY, the son of William and Dora [ Shenk ] Winchester. John enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 25, 1943. He became a test pilot during World War II, stationed at Langley Field, VA. He was honorably discharged on December 27, 1945. He later attended Watch-making school in Denver, CO. He repaired a great many watches and was also employed at the former Bell Aircraft as a rocket engineer and retired in March 1982, after 30 years of employment.
In February of 1943, he married the former Jane A. Ross, who predeceased him on October 14, 1989. He married the former Dorothy E. [ Bennion ] Lester, on March 17, 1990.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 16 years, Dorothy, are his children, Joan [ Pat ] Broderick, of Williamsville, NY; two sons, John L. [ Mary ] Winchester, Jr., of Orlando, FL; Craig [ Judy ] Winchester, of Enfield, CT; stepson, Allan [ Susan ] Lester, of North Tonawanda, NY; stepdaughter, Ruth [ Bob ] Mort, of Niagara Falls, NY; and was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Janine Lester. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jennifer [ Russell ] Murphy, of San Diego, CA; Molly [ Rob ] Jeffries, of Hamilton, Ont.; Sean [ Isela ] Broderick; Emilie Broderick; Sara Broderick, of San Diego, CA; Stacy [ Brian ] Buffone, of Boca Raton, FL; Amy [ fiancee Eric ] Winchester, of Enfield, CT; four step-grandchildren, John [ Mary Beth ] Lester, of Lockport, NY; Virginia [ Jeff ] Chancy, of Colorado; Robyn; Renae and Russell Mort, all of Niagara Falls, NY; 6 great grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren; a brother, Quentin [ Elizabeth ] Winchester, of Taveres, FL; a niece, Jean [ Robert ] Lynch, of East Bloomfield, NY; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother Winfield Winchester; sisters, Euerline; Ida and Ann.
He leaves a special friend, Archie McArthur and the cherished McArthur family. John dearly loved spending time at his cottage at Chandas Lake, Canada, as well as traveling to Hawaii and going going on Cruise's to Alaska. He will be greatly be missed by all who knew him.
