The son of Albert and Annie Rust, he earned his Medical Degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1846 and married Mary M. Wood in 1847. He practiced in Page County. In November of 1861 he went to Mount Jackson as a contract physician with the Confederate Army to serve at the Military Hospital there. In September of 1862 he traveled to Lynchburg as Acting Assistant Surgeon at the General hospital there. By March of 1864, he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from Page County. After the War, he retired and lived out his life in Luray.
