He is the son of Jahleel Woodbridge (1738 - 1796) and Lucy Edwards Woodbridge (1736 - 1786). He married Sarah Meech in 1795. They had eight children.

He served as selectman of early Worthington in 1793, 1795, 1802, 1803 and 1804. He was also a notable lawyer. The home he built at "the Corners" in the center of Worthington is still known as the Jonathan Woodbridge house.
