Malon was the son of Charles Hall Mayo by his second wife, Ellen Elizabeth Kilmartin, and the only one of the five children they had together to survive diptheria in 1886. Malon married Blanche Augusta Goodell 4 January 1896 in Brainerd, MN, and they had twelve children. He died at age 89 in Brainerd. (Both of Malon's parents also had children by other spouses.)
