He was born in Jefferson county on September 27, 1840, son of John C. Ackley of Jefferson county and Margaret Eckler of the town of Warren. At the age of five years he and his parents moved to Illinois, remaining there two years, then spent a year in Wisconsin, returning to Jefferson county when he was 12 years old.
His mother died there and he was brought to live with an uncle here, remaining with him until 1866. He married Emma Shaw of the town of Stark and took up farming ending up in Paines Hollow where he lived for over 20 years.
Surviving are a half brother, J. M. Ackley of Little Valley, Cataraugus county, and five nieces.
