George was the son of William and Sophia Cook (Kuck) Buddemeyer. He was the youngest of nine children. He lived his whole life on the farm on which he was born on Bay Road in Washington Township, Auglaize County, Ohio. He married Emma Griesinger in 1914. They had three children together and he adopted Emma's daughter, Alma. His daugther states, "He loved anything that grew." He worked on the farm still while in his 80s. He lost his wife, Emma, in 1968.
