Funeral services were held March 29, 1986 at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church for Mrs. Bessie Loraine (Payne) Read, 91. Church pastor, Rev. George Price, officiated. she died March 26 in the Golden Years Retreat, Bridgeport.
Born February 28, 1895 in Peaster, she married J.C. Payne in Brad on December 17, 1911; he died in 1958. She married John Read on December 16, 1964 in Spur. He died in 1968.
A Methodist and a homemaker, she was former president of the Women's Missionary Society for 25 years. She lived in Spur until 1980 when she moved to Bridgeport.
Survivors include a son, Alfred Payne, Houston; one brother, Melvin Ensey, Beaumont; two sisters, Nona Mae Ledbetter, Odessa and Mary Bell Swaringen, Decatur; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by a son, John Payne, 1985; two brothers, Jerry Ensey, 1974; Richard Ensey, 1960 two sisters, Beatrice Nelms, 1985 and Myrtle Kyrby, 1931.
Burial was in Spur Memorial Cemetery under direction of Campbell Funeral Home.
