MT. VERNON — Nola Velma Greer, 93, of Mt. Vernon, died January 26, 2012, at 10:15 p.m. at her home.
Nola was born Saturday, November 9, 1918, in Jefferson County, Illinois, the daughter of Albert Clinton and Flossie Alma (Ward) Highsmith. She married Everett Dwight Greer on October 20, 1939, in Jefferson County; he preceded her in death on June 13, 1997.
She was an active member of Camp Ground Baptist Church, for more than 80 years, teaching Sunday school classes, working with Vacation Bible School, and writing and directing Christmas programs; an active member on the board of Williams Cemetery; active with her husband in the Jefferson County Historical Society and the Jefferson County Historical Village; active with the Home Extension and her neighborhood Happy Circle Club; and active in the local Parent Teacher Association.
Her other special interests included gardening, working on the farm with her husband, managing a small kennel from her home, taking classes at Rend Lake College, singing with her husband in the Rend Lake College Community Chorus, and traveling through many parts of the United States in the family camper with the Road Runners Club.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ray Albert Highsmith; and sisters: Opal Alma (Highsmith) Gowler, Norma Louise Highsmith, and one who died in infancy.
Mrs. Greer was survived by her seven children: David Greer and wife Stephanie of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, Marlin Greer and wife Karen of Murray, Kentucky, Marilyn (Greer) Johnson and husband Terrence of Holland, Michigan, Leonard Greer and wife Sonnie of Dallas, Illinois, Joyce (Greer) Scott and husband Marshall of Mt. Vernon, Gail (Greer) Parr of Mt. Vernon, and Greta (Greer) Lawrence and husband Mike of Mt. Vernon; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Earl Highsmith; and a sister, Mildred Lucille (Highsmith) Crane.
Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m., January 28, 2012, at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Funeral services were on January 29, 2012, at Hughey Funeral Home, with Pastor Benton Fitzjerells officiating. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery.
