Son of William Banister and Nancy Bench. William, also known as Laurence, was a Confederate soldier in the 15th Regiment, Texas Cavalry, ranked in as 1st Bugler, and ranked out as Second Lieutenant.

William Lawrence/Laurence Banister was married twice:

1) Mary Ellen Buchanan. They had two children, John and William. Mary Ellen and William divorced and she later married William Colbaugh.

2) Mary Catherine Miller. They had 13 children. She died in 1910 and is buried at Roosevelt County, New Mexico.

The biography of William "Lawrence" Banister is found in the book "Banister Was There" by Leona (Banister) Bruce (pg. 141):
'The address of his [John Riley Banister] half-brother Vester {Sylvester} Banister is give as Upton, N.M., and below is a short biography of Lawrence Banister, father of them both. "Lawrence Banister was born August 10, 1833, and died Jan. 12, 1898, aged 64 years, 5 months, and 2 days. He was born near Barthola, Indiana, and died near Mangum, Oklahoma. He had served in Captain Frizzell's Company, Col. Sweet's Regiment, from Thorp Springs; was wounded twice at Tunsill's Ferry, Arkansas. L.S. Hughes of Mangum, Oklahoma, was the father of Henrietta Banister."'
