Jeff was named for Jefferson Davis by his father James Barron, in honor of the service which James' brother Ezekiel Barron had in the Mexican War under Jefferson Davis. At an early age, he developed cataracts, the operation was butchered and he was almost totally blind from approximately 19 years of age. He owned a grocery store for many years in Ackerman, working the customers even with his disability.
