George Washington Lewis was born on April 29, 1806 in Claiborne, Tennessee to Fielding Lewis, Sr and Mary Gambill. George first married Sarah Mary Bullard (1810-1840) in 1826 and together had at least eight children:

Sarah Bullard Lewis passed away on August 12, 1840, after 14 years of marriage; leaving George with their children that ranged in ages of 13 on down to a newborn. The baby girl who had been born in 1840 only lived for two years.

On September 17, 1848, George would marry for the second time to Cynthia Phelps/Fulps/Fulp and they had at least six children:
