Mary was the 2nd wife of John Ross--a young Quaker girl from Wilmington, DE, whose religious beliefs did not hold to the southern practice of slavery. She constantly encouraged her husband to free their slaves; finally in 1856 he consented and set those slaves owned by him free.
She married on 2 Sep 1844 in Philadelphia, PA, Chief John Ross of the Cherokees; they had 2 children: Annie Brian Ross (1845-1876) who is buried at Ross Cemetery, Park Hill, OK, also her father and brother) and who married Leonidas Dobson; and John Ross (1847-1905) who married Caroline C. Lazalear and had 3 children: Addie Roche, Leonidas Cookman, and Mary Ross.
**Chief John Ross was originally buried by his wife at Wilmington & Brandywine Cemetery, but his body was removed to the Ross Cemetery at Park Hill, OK.∼Mary B. Ross wife of John Ross. Born in Wilmington Sept 15, 1825 Died Phila July 20 1865
