Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company H, 101st Ohio Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 11, 1864 at Buzzard's Roost, Georgia. His citation reads "Seized a shell with fuse burning that had fallen in the ranks of his company and threw it into a stream, thereby probably saving his comrades from injury." He was a prisoner of war.
