Algernon Sylvester Swope of Broad Top City passed away at his home on Sunday, July 26, 1959, at 4:45 a.m. He had been ill since 1945.

The deceased was born at Cooks, Huntingdon County, on April 14, 1896, a son of John and Bridget (Leavelle) Swope. He was united in marriage to Orpha Bell Reed on Febraury 14, 1920 at Cumberland, Maryland.

He was a member of the Broad Top Church of the Nazarene.

The deceased was a member of the Broad Top American Legion. He was a veteran of World War I, having enlisted at Huntingdon on July 23, 1918. He was discharged at Camp Dis., N.J. on April 14, 1919, and he was gassed while serving with the AEF in France.

He was a coal miner by occupation and he retired in 1945 due to ill health,

In addition to his wife, he is survived by these chidlren: Mrs. Harold Chubb, Mrs. William Smith and Willis Swope, all of Lock Haven; Robert T Swope and Miss Leona Swope, Broad Top City. Eighteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild and these three brothers and one sister also survive: Mrs. Hulda Lane and Orville Swope, Robertsdale; Thomas Swope, Huntingdon, and Arthur Swope, Broad Top City.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jyly 29, at 2 p.m. at the Broad Top Church of the Nazarene. The service will be conducted by the pastor of the church and interment, directed by the Masood funeral servicde, Saxton, will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Broad Top City. Friends will be received at Masood funeral chapel after 7 p.m. this Monday evening and until 10 a.m. Wednesday, when the body will be taken to the church where it will lie in state from 11 a.m. until the hour for the service.

He served as a private in the US Army in WWI from July 23, 1918 to April 4, 1919. He was a private in Co. A. 114th MG BN.
