TULIA - James Roy Stockett, 87, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rob Lindley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wayside Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home.

Mr. Stockett was born Feb. 25, 1916, in Wayside to John Roy and Macie (McGehee) Stockett. He attended grade school at Wayside, high school at Happy and graduated from West Texas High School in Canyon. Then he attended West Texas State College in Canyon. He married Dorothy Bauer on Aug. 10, 1939.

They purchased a farm south of Tulia and moved there in 1940. He was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Arminta Sunday school class. He served on the board of trustees in 1956 and was chairman of the board that selected and purchased the first Youth Activity building.

He was the manager/director and co-owner of the Houston Elevator and Tulia Feedlot, Inc. south of Tulia. He was secretary/treasurer and the last original living member of the board of Incorporators of Mid-Plains Rural Telephone Co. in Tulia. He served on that board from 1950 to 1963 and was secretary from 1954 to 1963.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Ray Stockett, in 1979.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, James Stockett and his wife, Jane, of Wayside and Joe Stockett and his wife, Kim, of Plainview; a daughter, Nita Hooper of Tulia; a brother, N.M. Stockett and wife, Bettie, of Claude; nine grandchildren; seven stepgrandchidlren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
