Son of Joseph and Ruth Baker Cornell, he married Nancy Card (b. 1798?), daughter of Joseph, on April 4, 1812. Both were residents of East Greenwich, RI at the time. He farmed on Lot 6 in the town of Cincinnatus. Survived by his wife, in spite of the myriad of trees having her death in 1839 or in 1863 - was it another Nancy who appears with him in the 1870 Census? Or living next to their son Richard in 1875?

The Syracuse Daily Standard, Saturday, September 12, 1874 had this to say:

- Mr. Jeremiah Cornell, an old and respected citizen of Cincinnatus, died suddenly on the 4th inst. He had eaten breakfast and appeared in usual health. For about eight months he had been deprived of the use of his lower limbs, and just before his death he called his wife to assist him in getting up from his bed, and while rendering such assistance, his head suddenly dropped forward, and he almost immediately expired.
