John A. (Bert) Whitaker, 82, of Winona [OH] died Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the [Salem] Central Clinic after six months illness of complications. Born at Francesville, Ind., Aug. 13. 1879, he was a son of James and Miranda Prewitt Whitaker.

His first wife. Rose White Whitaker, preceded him in death. In 1927 he was married to Mrs. May Dishong of East Palestine. She survives, along with two daughters, Mrs. Bernice Strock of Alliance and Mrs. Hazel Dunbar of Woodworth; one son, Roy Whitaker of Hubbard; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Edwin Brenneman of Dayton; a stepson, Clyde of Mobile. Ala.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Homer Low of Rogers.

Mr. Whitaker came to Salem in 1936 from East Palestine, where he was police chief at one time, but had resided in Winona for the past 12 years. He retired from the Deming Co. in 1949.

Services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Arbaugh-Pearce Funeral Home in charge of Rev. Earl Brooks of Leesville, former pastor of the Winona Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Glenview Cemetery at East Palestine. Friends may call Sunday evening at the funeral home.
