Mary Thursa Gillis was born 20 Feb in Greensboro, Orleans County, Vermont; the daughter of James and Clarinda (Crawford) Gillis.

Mary Gillis was the youngest of seven children and lived on the 120 acre farm on the northeast corner of the same section as the Lyle farm. Mr. Gillis was born in County Down, Ireland and moved with his parents to Quebec, Canada then to Vermont, where he married, moving to Missouri in 1870. Mary's mother died when she was a few months old. Her father made maple syrup, in season, as his main crop, also making the barrels during the winter.

Mary was united in marriage 10 Sep 1874 in Nodaway County, Missouri with James Lyle; the oldest of ten children born to Hugh and Nancy (Hutchison) Lyle.

Mary and James were the parents of six children:

1. Samuel A. born 1876 married Cora Everhart
2. Cora May born 1878 married Eugene Crawford
3. Fred Lewis born 1880 married Myrtle Lee Fuller
4. Frank Emory born 1884 married Mabel E. Kennedy
5. Earnest James born 1890
6. Bessie Clara born 1895 married Len Curtiss Daise

James passed away 19 Aug 1917 in Graham, Nodaway, Missouri and was laid to rest in the Prairie Home Cemetery, Graham, Nodaway, Missouri.

Mary lived in Graham until she moved to the home of her daughter Bessie in Maryville, where she passed away 21 Feb 1957 at the age of ninety-nine years. She did much church work, and Presbyterian sewing and piecing and quilting of quilts. Mary was laid to rest with her husband in Prairie Cemetery, Graham, Nodaway, Missouri.
