Philip enlisted in the Confederate Army on September 19, 1861; serving in the Georgia Infantry, Company C, 60th Regiment. Records suggest that Philip was transferred to the Confederate Navy prior to discharge.

Philip Jasper Bird married Martha Smith on December 21, 1865. The ceremony took place in Catoosa County, an area in north Georgia near the Tennessee border.

They were parents of John, Jennie, Cora and Omar Bird. The youngest two were twins. In the 1870's, the Bird family moved to Scott County, Arkansas. Philip was listed as a farmer in 1880 and a blacksmith in the 1900 census.
