He purchased the first automobile in Centerville. It ultimately was the cause of his death (crushed between it and the barn when priming it). All of the children would run along side and behind the car as Dr. Mac drove through town. When he applied the brakes, he never forgot to say in a loud voice, "Whoa, car!"

He was also a notary public. Two documents in Robert Henry George's Civil War pension file were hand written by him to verify that Bob George was who he said he was. One of them was signed by Robert H. George and the other was signed by R. E. Warren. Both of these documents are about an old family bible that records the births of the children of Hardin and Angeline George.

DR. L. R. McCARTY DEAD - 12-18-1924

IN MEMORIAL

Just at the hour of going to press we learn of the death of Dr. L. R. McCarty, which occurred this morning at 6 o'clock at his home in Centerville.

How sad I was to learn of the death for Dr. L. R. McCarty. I well remember when he came to Alpha and began the practice of his profession in the year 1887; and how fast he made friends who have remained true and loyal through all the intervening years. Dr. McCarty was of a genial, hospitable, happy nature, generous, kindly and considerate, and readily won the friendship of all with whom he came in contact.

It was never too cold or to dark for him to respond to the call of suffering or distressed. He always had a smiling face and a word of good cheer for the sorrowing.

He married in 1888, and in about 1891 he had a beautiful home built in Centerville, where he has continued to live ever since.

He was a leading physician of Yell County for 37 years. He stood for the betterment of his country. I know he will be greatly missed by the people around Centerville. He measured his every action to conform to the Golden Rule. I believe, if we live right, that some sweet we will see his smiling face again. He is gone, but he will not be forgotten.

He was progressive and public-spirited to a degree, ever active in the upbuilding of the schools of the County, and in every movement for the advancement and upbuilding of his community, County and State he played a leading part.

I will say to his wife and children that the deepest sympathy of myself and wife goes out to them in their great bereavement.

‘Tis hard to part from those we have learned to love, and meet them on earth no more; but if we meet Heaven above, out grief will then be o'er. Former things all passed away, lett endless ages roll, for Heaven's bright unclouded day will satisfy the soul.

A friend,
Andrew Pickens, Belleville, Ark.

Dr. McCarty is survived by his wife, two daughters and several other relative who have the deepest sympathy of all in the great bereavement.

The funeral service, conducted by Rev. J. D. Dawson, will be held at the Mt. George cemetery this afternoon at 3 o'clock, the Masonic fraternity, of which deceased had long been a member, being in charge of the burial rites.
