Gentile was Born in Motta Santa Lucia in the province of Catanzaro, Calabria,Italy. It was said that he was found on the doorstep of Giuseppe Aiello by his wife Lucia (Villella) Aiello, on May 20, 1888. The child was at the apparent age of four days with band, diapers, new linen towel, cap of wool and the figure of St. Charles Borromeo, there was also a note that said "The name you give that I would be Gentile Garibaldi".

Gentile was also known as Charles Aiello since he lived with the Aiello family. He was never legally adopted but was considered one of them. It is believed that Lucia was actually his mother though she claimed that she found him on the doorstep.

Gentile's last name was Garibaldi but was changed to Caribardi when he arrived in the port of New York on February 1893.

He died on "Black Monday" in the Reilly Colliery Mine #1 in Barr Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
