Alvis, Henry S., Private, Company B; Henry S. Alvis enlisted in the 1st Alabama Cavalry (USA) Company B, on March 20, 1864 in Decatur, Alabama for three years & mustered into service on March 27, 1864 in Decatur, Alabama. His physical description was grey eyes, dark hair
dark complexion and 5ft 10in tall, 43 years old and occupation was farmer. On April 17, 1864 he was left sick in the hospital in Decatur, Alabama.
Unit rolls state that he was on furlough April 1 to May 1, 1864 to settle his family in Pulaski, Tennessee. This is a disparity in that the rolls indicate he was in the hospital at the same time.
He deposed on December 18, 1888 in his Invalid Pension application that he served at Huntsville, Alabama with the Detachment of the 1st Alabama Cavalry at Stevenson and Huntsville, Alabama from December 1864 onward. He returned to duty from a field hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee on August 13, 1865. He mustered out of service on October 20, 1865 at Huntsville, and collected $25.00 for clothing, $300.00 for bounty and $21.27 for bridle and saddle.
According to affidavits in Emily Duncan's pension application, Henry S. Alvis died of heart failure while living on property owned by A.W. Marbry, near Knob Creek, Lawrence County, Tennessee and is buried in an unmarked grave in Knob Creek Cemetery.
