John Clayburn Hicks

John Clayburn Hicks was the eleventh and last child born into the family of Elijah and Lucinda Whitaker Hicks. John was born on April 28, 1925 and raised with the city limits of Hindman, Kentucky. He was practically raised in this father's store., where he learned a lot about dealing with the public. At a very young age his father would leave John in charge of the store, sometimes for several hours at a time. John's mother was a Christian woman, from an early age and her faith made a deep impression on John. Later, his father also joined the church. IN 1945 John met Mary Zanna Cody of Clay County, Kentucky. They were married in June 1946. This marriage lasted until Zanna passed away after 38 years, 4 months and 14 days. During this marriage John and Zanna adopted 2 girls, Mary A. Kelly, now of Lexington, Kentucky and Sarah C. Hicks of Ashland. John was a member of Hindman Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and the Rose of Sharon Chapter of the Eastern Star for over 25 years. After his father died John helped his mother with her business affairs, and he and Zanna went into the theatre business, both indoor and drive-in. He as also Postmaster at HIndman for over 30 Years. IN 1988 John and Rose Grada V. King were married and moved to Litt Carr, Kentucky. John is survived by his wife, Rose Grada. Two daughters, Mary A. Kelly and Sarah C. Hicks; Two Granddaughters, Shannon K. Kelly and Fallon A. Hicks. Also he is survived by Four Stepdaughters, Delane Collins, Betty Mullins, Diane Grillon and Deborah Livlesberger and One Stepson - Chalmer Len Cloud. Plus 13 Step Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his Parents- Elijah and Lucinda Hicks; 6 Sisters - Clarissa Hicks, Corine Clarke, Cleo Carroll, Monnie Owens, Dula Rae Dennissoff and Hassie Martin; 4 Brothers- Wilber, James, Denzil and Leslie Hicks; 2 nephews: Elijah H. Clarke, John Ray Duree and Jimmy Hicks. John passed away March 21, 2008 at the Hazard ARH, making his stay here on earth 82 Years. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 24, 2008, at the Hindman Funeral Services Chapel with Mike Caudill and Darrell Short officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Memory Gardens at Hindman, Kentucky.
