Joseph Martino
Age 92, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 21, 2011, at St Luke's Lutheran Home for the Aging, following complications from a fall at home. He was surrounded by his family. Born in Canton on Sept. 4, 1919, Joe was a lifelong resident. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1937, worked for the Akro Rubber Company in Canton for 40 years, and was a much-loved custodian for North Canton City Schools for nearly 20 years, most of which was at Clarendon Elementary School. Joe's athletic prowess was legendary in Canton and around the state. He was inducted into several halls of fame and all star teams for his sports accomplishments. He played on several national championship teams in basketball and softball, and there's still talk of one of the longest home runs ever hit out of the Firestone Stadium in Akron. Joe held the high jump record at McKinley High School for decades up until modern times. He enjoyed woodworking and was a very talented craftsman and handyman. Joe was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Canton and was involved in many of their fundraising activities in which he donated his time and talent.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emidio and Josephine (Iacovone) and his beloved wife of 62 years, Jeanette (Paniccia), whom he married on July 8, 1944. He missed her every day since her death six years ago. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Nick and Paul of Canton; and his daughter-in-law, Joanie Martino (Lazarus). He is survived by his identical twin brother, Dan; Dan's wife, Arbie; and their daughter, Mary Jo Varn, all of Canton. He is also survived by his two sons, Ron of North Canton and Joe Jr. (Gail) of Louisville; three granddaughters; Ron's daughter, Allison Martino (attending graduate school in Michigan) and Joe Jr.'s daughters, Tara Martino and Wendy Martino, Wendy's fiancé, Brett Stahura, (all of California); and their mother, Marcia Martino of North Canton. Joe is also survived by many beloved family members.
The family wishes to thank the kind staffs of St. Luke Lutheran Home for the Aging and Stark County Hospice for their expertise, caring and comfort to Joe in his last days. Family and friends may call Monday, Dec. 26, from 4-7 p.m. at Rossi Funeral Home, 730 30th St. NW Canton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church of Canton followed by internment in Calvary Cemetery. A donation can be made in Joe's honor to St. Anthony's Church or to Community Hospice of Stark County.
