James was the son of John More Daniel and Marinda Sturges. He married Laura M. Leonard about 1877, presumably in Indiana. He was a telegraph operator and railroad station agent. He was living in Washington, Cass Co., IN, in 1880, and subsequently moved with his family to Texas. They lived first in Palestine, Anderson Co., and then Georgetown, Williamson Co.
