In 1834 he settled in Cincinnati and wintered in New Orleans.
He was known for his portraits of children and their pets early in his career and turned to genre and animal painting. He was an honorary member of the National Academy of Design from 1848 to 1860 and a full member until his death. He became a painter at 17 and worked in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Louisville, New Orleans, and other Southern cities before opening a studio in Cincinnati in 1834. He traveled between Cincinnati, New York, and New Orleans before permanently moving to New York in 1870 where he spent the remainder of his life.
Served in the Civil War as a Captain.
