James was born on July 26, 1904 at Calls Fort, Utah, a son of John Porter and Lavinia Orme Barnard.
He married Inez Barret on June 29, 1937 in the Logan LDS Temple.
He was an active Church Worker, and had served as Superintendent of the Deweyville MIA, also Secretary of the Elders Quorum and was a High Priest in the South Bear River Stake.
Surviving are his widow and one son, Nolan James Barnard, Tremonton, Utah; one daughter, Mrs Melbourne (Nadine) Grow, Ogden, Utah; 2 grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters, Horace Barnard and Mrs Ray (Elsie) Heusser, Deweyville, Utah; Mrs Maurice (LaRee) Fowers, Ogden, Utah; John J Barnard, Logan, Utah; and Mrs Grant Marble, Beaver Dan, Utah.
Burial was held in the Deweyville Cemetery, Deweyville, Utah.
