Aristides Welch was a throughbred race horse breeder well known in racing circles in the last half of the 19th century. He raised and bred horses on his farm, Erdenheim Stud Farm, located in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania. In 1872 Welch purchased the horse Learnington, who in his first season at stud, sired a colt, Aristides, named after Aristides Welch. In 1875, the colt, Aristides, went on to become the first winner of the Kentucky Derby.
