It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Arthur Irwin Bassin of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, on January 4, 2012, with his family by his side. Arthur was the youngest son of Robert and Rose Bassin of Coney Island, New York. He grew up and went to school in Coney Island, but graduated from the oldest medical university in Bologna, Italy. He is survived by his wife, Daniela; his daughters, Claudia and Sharon; sons-in-law, Daniel Abraham and Shawn Canatsey; his wonderful grandchildren, Francesca, Giulia and Matteo Abraham and Robert Canatsey; his brother, Ned; sister-in-law, Roz; nieces, Gayla and Sarice and their families; brothers and sisters-in-law in Italy and many cousins in New York and dear friends and colleagues on both coasts and their families. Arthur was a dedicated physician of obstetrics and gynecology who for over 30 years cared for his patients the old-fashioned way and helped thousands of babies take their first breath. He loved his family and friends, he lived for his profession and he was passionate about books and photography. His loving nature, his wisdom and candid, caring advice and his beautiful photographs will be part of our memories forever. A private graveside service was held at Sholom Memorial Park in Sylmar, California on January 6, 2012. A memorial service to honor his service to the community will be held at Providence Little Company of Mary Hospital on Thursday, February 9, 2012, at 2:00 pm.
