Gail was the oldest child of Frank Spence and Oda Elizabeth Hopper Spence. Until the age of 13, she lived on a farm near Neosho, MO. When she was 13, the family relocated to Iowa and settled first in Anamosa. Gail worked for Storm's Five & Dime after high school. She raised two daughters (Barbara and Beverly) and in later years, worked for Craemer's and Killians Department Stores
