Pioneer Resident of Wilcox, Mrs. Sutton, Dies This Week.

By: Mrs Edwin A. Beeks
Final rites for Mrs. Daniel Thomas Sutton, 95, were conducted at the First Baptist Church, Rochelle, Tuesday May 10.
The Rev. Arthur Spiller officiated and burial was in the Morningside Cemetery, Rochelle. Dorsey Funeral Home was in charge. A choir of Christian friends rendered the music.
Six grandsons served as pallbearers. The remaining 88 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren were honorary pall bearers. The grouping of these descendents of all ages from infant to adulthood, was most unique in itself, falling most informally into the formation of a broken heart.
Mrs. Sutton had lived on the same farm and in the same house for more than 70 years and was a pioneer of this county. Before her marriage, she was Georgia Lou Royal, the daughter of John Isom Royal and Mary Jane Godwin of North Carolina, pioneer settlers of Dooly County, where Mrs. Sutton was born on September 1, 1859, near Lily. Her father gave his life serving the Confederacy during the War Between the States. She was married into a pioneer Dooly County family in 1876, near Lily. She and her husband who preceded her in death by seven and one-half years, lived most of their married life in Rochelle.
Of her 15 children, seven are yet living: Daughters, Mrs. Z. T. Lasseter, Mrs. Henry S. Fitzgerald, both of Rochelle and Mrs. Edwin A. Beeks, of Miami, Fla. Sons, John D. Sutton, Victor R. Sutton, Thurman Sutton of Rochelle and Fred Sutton of Columbus.
Mrs. Sutton was a charter member of the Rochelle Baptist Church and an honorary member of the Martha McLeod Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It was fitting for one which had lived so full of a life and contributed so much of her own and future generations to be called home on Mother's Day, May 8, in the evening twilight.
This mother of 15 children, 10 of whom she reared to maturity, was for more than 85 years a sprightly little person with a ready smile or chuckle and merry black eyes. Consequently she was the adored comrade and confidante of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and their friends, who enjoyed nothing more than a trek to her suburban home where she and her husband lived for more than 72 years.
Mrs. Sutton 85th birthday found her accustomed place in the TEL Sunday School Class of the Rochelle Baptist Church and at the morning service. Until that age he place by the Eastern window had rarely been empty throughout the years. Her faithfulness and sincerity were truly and inspiration as so much could be seen in her quite face as she sat in worship.
A fine courage, patience, faith, tolerance, gentleness -- all these cardinal virtues were written in this "living epistle," always giving greater weight to the truths the pastor read from the Book. And the warm light from the stained glass window even fell athwart hands that spoke of a beautiful service of ministry in the byways.
She was even a source of inspiration to all. Weighted with the harvest of a well spent life she looked toward a glad new morning as she left behind the rich heritage of a fine family and an abiding influence on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
