Obedience was the oldest of several children born to John and Catharine Smith. They are as follows: Obedience (Smith) Haviland (1813-1844); Polly (Smith) Miller (1815-1880); Abigail (Smith) Eddy (PA, USA 1817-1881); Louisa (Smith) Fairchild (1823-1844); Samuel Lawrence Smith (b: USA 1824-1895) ; Adeline (Smith) Laing (1827-1890); Calvin Smith (1830-1833); Hannah (Smith) Atkinson (b: Canada 1832-1905); Catharine (Smith) McAlister (b: Windham, Norfolk 1834-1918); Clarissa Jane (Smith) Lewis (b: Canada 1834-1911)
On December 21, 1830, Benjamin Haviland and Obedience Smith were married in Woodhouse, Norfolk County. Together they were parents to Melinda Amelia (Haviland) Edy (1831-1873), Eli Haviland (1835-1914), and Willis Haviland (1839-1918).
While it appears Obedience and her husband led a quiet farming existence it seems that her sisters married democracy seeking husbands whom helped establish the terms of local governance in rural Brant and Norfolk counties. John Eddy (husband of Abigail), and Wellington McAlister (husband of Catherine), along with Elaikim Malcolm, James Malcolm, and Charles Chapin, met for their inaugural meeting at the inn of Isaac Brock Malcolm on January 21, 1850, and legally constituted through legislation titled "an Act to provide by one general law for the erection of Municipal Coroprations and the establishment of Regulations of Police in and for the several counties, cities, towns, townships and villages in Upper Canada."
Death came early to Obedience Haviland, who died on January 23, 1844, at the young age of 30. It did not take long, however, for Benjamin to remarry a 21 year old Mary Jane Orton on March 21, 1844. Written by G. P. MacKay (More info about Obedience Smith Haviland at WikiTree.)
