Lena M. Bear, 96, of Eldon, died Sunday evening, May 11 at the Lee House in Eldon. She was born at Bagnell on Sept. 27, 1911, to Will and Bessie Lupardus Brown. On Sept. 14, 1933, she was married to Arthur S. Bear of Tuscumbia, who preceded her in death in March 2006.
Mrs. Bear was a graduate of Tuscumbia High School. The couple resided in Tuscumbia for several years, operating a fishing camp on the Osage River, and later a grocery business. At the conclusion of the war in 1945, they bought the Sanitary Market and moved to Eldon. Mrs. Bear assisted with the business and was active in community affairs. She was a member of the Eldon United Methodist Church. Mrs. Bear was also a member and past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. She was a leader in the PTA. As president of the Friends of Music, she led a successful drive to raise money for new high school band uniforms. She was also a member of Euterpean Club, Eldon Garden Club, Eldon Country Club and past president of the Business and Professional Women's Club.
Surviving are: a daughter, Sandra Shelton and her husband David of Rolla; a son, William Bear, and his wife Regina of Seattle, Wash.; grandchildren Marc Shelton, MD, and wife Teressa of Springfield, Ill.; James Shelton MD, and wife DeeDee of Jefferson City, Travis Bear and wife Kacy of Seattle, Wash., and Courtney Bear of Seatrtle, Wash.; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Lucille Brightwell and Doris Porter of Osage Beach.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home in Eldon, followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be at the Tuscumbia Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eldon United Methodist Church or The Miller County Historical Society.
