Mary Helen Burk, 85, Tyler, passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 from natural causes at the age of 85.
Mary grew up in Robertson County and lived in Tyler from 1955 through 1987. At that time, she married John O. Burk, Jr. and moved to Corsicana. In 2010, widowed and in ill health, she moved back to Tyler to be near family.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lora Smith; her husbands, O.D. McLeroy, Bob Spier, and John Burk; stillborn son; sisters, Frankie Roberts, Vena Starkey, Bonnie Boney, and Buryl Bolton and their husbands; and several nephews and a niece.
She is survived by her children, Norma Corbitt and Pete and Nita McLeroy; grandchildren, Courtney Trahan, Helen Kalinowski, Brian Corbitt, Dewane Towns, and Diane and John Hill, and their families, Edward, Talon, Darius, Jenna, Julie, Anthony, and Karina.
She is also survived by her stepchildren, Norma Ann Spier, Michael and Mary Ruth Burk, and Linda and Robert Moore; step-Grandchildren, Paul and Diana Burk, Patti and Bola Olusola, John and Kathy Burk, Kenneth Burk, Robby and Selina Moore, and Terri and Chad Stultz, and their families, Jordan, Ryan, Seyi, B.J., Dax, Dane, Taylor, Garrison, Scott Allen, Justin, and Chase.
Other survivors grieving her passing are a sister, Billie Jo Nieman, nieces and nephews, friends, and caretakers.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel, 1530 North 45th St., Corsicana.
Visitation was from 12:30 p.m. to service time in the Chapel. Dr. Rick Lamb, senior pastor at Northside Baptist Church, where John and Mary were members, officiated. Interment followed at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery, Retreat. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation be made to Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd, Tyler, TX 75701.
