William Whitney (Whit) Davenport, 86, died on January 13, 2012, in Crystal River, Florida.
He was born August 7, 1925, in Plymouth, PA, to George F. and May (Atwood) Davenport. At three months of age, he moved with his family to St. Petersburg, Florida. His father died six months after this move, so he and his brothers were raised by his mother and her parents.
Prior to high school graduation, Whit enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in Carrier Air Service units on Oahu and Guam during World War II. Following the war, he graduated from St. Petersburg High School, then received a B.S. from the University of Florida. He later earned a master's degree from the University of Florida.
Whit worked as an engineer for NACA (now NASA) in Virginia, for Hamilton Standard in St. Petersburg and, after a brief time of teaching at St. Pete Junior College, he spent the last 26 years of his career as an aerospace engineer for Honeywell in St. Pete.
During his college years, he met and married Camille Humes of St. Petersburg. They had three children and eight grandchildren. Whit had 19 great-grandchildren (as of 2013).
Whit was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Camille Humes Davenport, and by three older brothers, Lewis, Andrew and Robert Davenport.
He enjoyed building their weekend cabin in Citrus County with his son, brother and wife. Whit and Camille moved there permanently from St. Petersburg in 1996. Whit was a Christian and a member of First Baptist Church of Crystal River.
