Mr. Lucas was a World War II Navy veteran and past Post Commander of the Shenandoah VFW 8613. He was previously employed as a salesman for Thomas Foods and manager of Wayne Lanes. He was an avid bowler and the first inductee in the Augusta County Hall of Fame in 1981. He bowled in state and national level tournaments. He enjoyed traveling and fishing.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Family members include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Wendell and Patricia Lucas of Charleston, South Carolina, Dennis and Andrea Lucas of West Sand Lake, New York, and Michael Lucas of Staunton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Joe Leger of Stuarts Draft and Gloria and Hugh Sprouse of Staunton; a sister-in-law, Ruth Lucas of Elkton; nine grandchildren, Phaedra Honts, Ashley Clevenger, Krista Strom, Dennis Lucas II, Nikki Wells, Joey Leger, Rachel Leger, Candi Tackett, and Joshua Sprouse; nine great grandchildren, Lexi Honts, Trey Honts, Maddie Clevenger, Chad Clevenger, Richard and Johnathan Strom, Phaedra Wells, Montana Sprouse, and Sierra Hite; and a special friend, Jenny Sprouse.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2009, at the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Reverend Randall Black. Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens with military honors.
Active pallbearers will be Dennis Lucas, II, Joey Leger, Joshua Sprouse, Wallace Sprouse Jr., Jon Bush, and Greg Cummings.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
