James P. White Dead

James Porter White, aged forty-eight years, died at the ranch of Tom Wilson, out on Last Dollar mountain, some time Wednesday afternoon.

Deceased had been employed at the Wilson ranch but three days prior to his death.

He had worked as usual during the morning, sacking grain, and after eating a substantial meal, complained that he was not feeling well.

Wilson told him to "loaf about" until he felt better, and went out to the field to work.

On his return to the house about five-thirty, Wilson called to White, but thought him asleep, and he went again and put up his team.

Returning to the house, Wilson failed to rouse him by calling to him, and discovered he was dead, the body being cold, which indicates that he had died soon after Wilson left him.

Wilson then rode to the Sam Collins ranch on Deep Creek, and notified Coroner Walter Ballinger of the death. Ballinger made the trip to Last Dollar and brought the body to Telluride, where it was prepared for burial by the San Juan undertakers.

Funeral services will be held from the Congregational Church, at 1:00 o'clock. Rev. H.C. Cooley will officiate.

"James Porter White is recorded on the old records.

A cemetery plot was purchased on June 5th 1924 by the San Juan Land Co. It is also recorded that James Porter White died on June 4 1924. The plot purchased is described as Lot 3, Blk 125, #1302. This really doesn't do us any good as the plat map that would relate to these Blk and Lot #'s was destroyed in a fire and at this point cannot be deciphered.

The old part of the cemetery is basically located anywhere east of the maintenance shed.

In checking the survey that was done in 1996, locating monuments in the cemetery, there was no record of a monument for James Porter White. So the outcome is that James Porter White is buried at Lone Tree Cemetery, we just don't know where."
