Verline was the fourth child of George Thomas and Ona Marie Pettitt. On March 15, 1940, she married Phillip Lawrence Milhous, a son of Ezra Charles and Lima Anna (Hudson) Milhous. Phil was also the first cousin of President Richard Milhous Nixon.
Verline and Phil owned and operated Phil's McCulloch Saw Shop for many years. Verline taught Sunday School. Verline also was an advocate for the low income disabled, and were recognized for their efforts by Presidents Johnson and Nixon.
