Herman J. Weinheimer, 65, of Stonewall, one of the state's foremost Hereford cattle breeders, prominent ranchman and outstanding civic leader, died suddenly and unexpectedly after a brief illness in a local hospital early Friday.
Weinheimer pioneered the raising of registered Herefords in the Texas Hill Country in 1921 with a foundation herd of five heifers. Since that time his breeding cattle have been shipped all over the nation and in considerable quantity to South America, India, Indochina and other foreign countries. For the past three years his herd animals have been used in the cattle tests at Bluebonnet Farms of McGregor, by the extension service of Texas A&M College.
Weinheimer was a member of the American Hereford Association, had served as director of the Texas Hereford Association; was a charter member and early director of the Blanco County Hereford Breeders' Association; director in the Hill Country Hereford Association; Brownwood Hereford Association, and was one of the founders of the Gillespie County Registered Breeders' Association.
Operating in partnership with his son, Roy Weinheimer, in recent years, their breeding heard had been held at about 80 head of cows. The furnished many club calves to 4-H and FFA breeding programs and took an active interest in county, regional and state stock shows and sales.
Weinheimer was one of the founders of Gillespie County Soil Conservation District in 1976 and has served the district as one of the supervisors and vice president of the board since that time. He was a great advocate of soil and water conservation and followed all possible practices on his extensive land holdings.
He was a member of the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce, Gillespie County Farm Bureau and active in many civic enterprises.
Funeral services are to be held Monday at 9:15 a.m. at Schaetter Funeral Home and 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Rev. J. J. Hildebrand officiating.
Survivors with his widow are three sons, Major Jacob Weinheimer
of Biloxi, Miss., Thomas Weinheimer of Baton Rouge, La., and Roy Weinheimer of Stonewall; Three daughters, Mrs. Harold Woods of Corsicana, Mrs. Harold Kusenberger of Stonewall and Mrs.. L. G. Pipkin of Mobile, Ala.
