COLUMBUS, GA— Dr. Cleon Denton Johnson, a lifelong resident of Columbus, died at his home in Columbus, Georgia on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. He was 86 years old.

A service in celebration of his life will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Friday at 11 a.m., followed by a reception in the St. Thomas Parish Hall. After the reception, internment will be at Parkhill Cemetery. T

Dr. Johnson was born September 13, 1923, at his home in St. Elmo. He attended the University of Georgia and graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1951. While in medical school, Dr. Johnson met a medical technologist student from Kentucky, Alice St. Clair Newman, who he married in 1949. Alice predeceased him in 1991. At a dance organized for ballroom dance students, he met Sherry Orkand and they married in 1998. Dr. Johnson began his interest in medicine at a very early age while accompanying his grandfather on house calls. His grandfather, father and uncle were also Columbus physicians, so when he moved back to Columbus to begin his practice, he was continuing a great family tradition. He was board certified in Family Practice and he founded the group, Johnson, Todd and Jernigan, and worked with them most of his career. Dr. Johnson was also very active in the medical community. He was one of the founders of Doctors Hospital where he served 15 years as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He served in many capacities for the Muscogee County Medical Society, including President, and was also Chief of Staff at The Medical Center of Columbus. Dr. Johnson was very happy that his own son, Dr. James H. Johnson, was able to practice with him beginning in 1988 until his first retirement. In 1993, after 42 years of practice, he retired, but soon opened a new office so he could stay active in medicine and in contact with his treasured patients. He continued to practice medicine until his retirement in 2006. Dr. Johnson was a veteran of World War II having served in Belgium with the United States Army Infantry. He was one of the founders of St. Thomas Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry, and was a former member of the Columbus Sertoma Club and the Country Club of Columbus. Dr. Johnson remained life-long friends with his St. Elmo neighbors and had many other interests including raising cows, showing Pasofino horses, fishing, growing vegetables and plants, searching for arrowheads, watching birds, dancing and collecting antique clocks. During his short retirement, he operated a horse riding facility and small petting zoo on his farm in Ellerslie. Dr. Johnson always had a great spirit of adventure and even learned to fly a Para plane, rafted the Nantahala with his children, took up ballroom dancing, and traveled to Antarctica, all after the age of 65. Dr. Johnson cared deeply for his many patients and was a loving husband, father, stepfather, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed. Dr. Johnson was preceded in death by his father, Dr. C. Denton Johnson, his mother, Edna Rudisill Johnson, his first wife, Alice St. Clair Newman Johnson, sister, Gloria Johnson Cummings and grandson, Reid Daniels Webb.

He is survived by his very loving and devoted wife, Sherry Orkand Johnson, a sister, Edna Jeanette Johnson, and children, Charles Denton Johnson and his wife, Pamela, Dr. James Herbert Johnson and his wife, Brandilyn, Robert Whitaker Johnson and his wife, Anna, all of Columbus, and daughter Alice Leigh Johnson Webb and her husband, Isaac Jones Webb of Twin City, Georgia. He is also survived by ten grandchildren: Carter Denton Johnson, Tyler Newman Johnson, Lindsay Elizabeth Johnson, Jason Hunter Johnson, Hamilton James Johnson, Landon Conor Johnson, Whitney Clark Johnson, Robert Whitaker Johnson, Alice St. Clair Webb Collins and her husband Mark, and Taylor Johnson Webb; great grandson Mason Reid Collins; step-children: Monica Farley and her husband Scott of Wimberley, Texas, Edward Orkand and his wife Jenny of Houston, Texas, and Stephanie Orkand of Austin, Texas; two step-grandsons Evan Farley and Max Orkand.
