Merle Messing, 90, of Rockford, IL passed away Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, at his home.
Born May 25, 1921, in Thayer County, NE, to August and Margaret (Eisenhauer) Messing. Merle served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Marion (Gehlhausen) on Oct. 20, 1942; she died Dec. 30, 1971. He spent most of his life living and working in the greater Rockford area, being employed at J.I. Case, Barber Colman, and Rockford Machine & Tool. He later married Esther (Metz, Provenzano) on March 15, 1973.
Survived by sons, Sidney and Christopher; stepsons, David and James Provenzano; daughter, Rebecca Earnst; grandson, Paul Gentner; granddaughter, Mary Kate Messing; great- granddaughter, Victoria Gentner; sister, Maxine VanWinkle; and brother, Lester Messing.
Predeceased also by sisters, Lila Goeking and Irene Dux and brother, Robert Messing.
Service at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, with visitation from 9 a.m. to time of service; the Rev. Carl Beekman will officiate. Interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
