Edna M. Schwanke, age 85, a Manitowoc resident, died Wednesday morning, May 7, 2014 at River's Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc.

She was born on May 25, 1928 in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Edwin and Ella (Bauch) Raether. On November 3, 1951 she married Loyal E. Schwanke at First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. He preceded her in death on May 18, 1972. Edna grew up on her parents farm on Dutch Road, Manitowoc. Once married, her residences were English Lake Road, South 30th Street and for the last year of her life she lived at Rivers Bend. Edna was employed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newtonburg, as a janitor for many years. She was also a housekeeper for various people in the area. Edna was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newtonburg, and a member of the Ladies Aid. Edna enjoyed working in her flower beds, baking pies, cookies and blueberry muffins. She also enjoyed playing Chinese checkers with her granddaughters and playing the piano (keyboard) with a band in area nursing homes.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: Rev. Glenn & Teresa Schwanke, Houghton, MI, Rev. Larry & Martha Schwanke, Milton, WI; two granddaughters: Victoria Schwanke, Houghton, MI, Jessica Schwanke, Milton, WI; and two brothers: Elton Raether and Norman Raether, both of Manitowoc. Also surviving are nieces and nephews: Gerald Raether, Donald (Pat) Raether, Jeanette (John) Mahloch, Allan (Patty) Raether, Louis (Connie) Raether, Lori (Todd) Olson and Peggy Raether, all of Manitowoc, along with grandnieces and grandnephews. She was also preceded in death by a brother: Elmer Raether; and four sisters-in-law: Adeline Raether, Gertrude Raether, Rose Raether and Linda Raether.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2014 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newtonburg. Officiating at the Service will be the Rev. Victor Headrick with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newtonburg, from 9:00 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2014 until 10:45 a.m.
