DR. ALTER OF ST. PAUL DIES; COUNTY NATIVE

Dr. Wayne Alter, 75, retired St. Paul veterinarian and a native of Rush County, died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday in Major Hospital at Shelbyville after five years of failing health.


Dr. Alter, who retired a year and a half ago, was widely known in this area. He had been engaged in the practice of veterinary medicine at St. Paul since 1920 after starting this career at Flat Rock in 1919.


He was a veteran of World War I where he served in the U.S. Cavalry Veterinary Corps.


A son of David O. and Maggie Brookbank Alter, he was born in Gowdy on June 2, 1892, and was married February 12, 1921 to Hazel Brown, who survives.


A past president and life member of the Indiana Veterinarians Association, Dr. Alter was a member of the St. Paul Methodist Church, the Waldron Masonic Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post at Shelbyville and the 10th District Veterinarians Association.


Surviving with the widow are three children, William H. Alter of Bedford, Robert Alter of Edinburgh and Mrs. David C. (Mary) Martin of Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. Ola Reed near Gowdy; a brother, Dr. Chester Alter of Denver, Colo., and seven grandchildren. One brother, Dr. Retla Alter, died in 1951.


The Rev. William Culbreath will conduct services at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Carmony Funeral Home in St. Paul, where friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with burial in Paul Hill Cemetery.
