US Army Officer. He graduated from Philips Andover Academy in 1913 and Yale University in 1917. He served in the Connecticut National Guard while attending college, and after graduation received his Army commission as a Second Lieutenant. He graduated from the Artillery Officer Basic (1922) and Advanced (1931) Courses and the Command and General Staff College (1942). He served in France with the 76th Artillery Regiment during World War I. During World War II he commanded the 13th Field Artillery Brigade during training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, served with Second Army as a staff officer planning and overseeing execution of unit field exercises prior to their departure for the front lines, and commanded a Second Army headquarters detachment at the Camp Atterbury, Indiana mobilization site. He remained in the Army until 1946, and retired as a Colonel. (Bio by: Bill McKern)
