Irene was born Sept. 25, 1917, in Herrin, the daughter of Marion and Stella (Cox) Kirk. She married W.W. Childers in Johnston City July 30, 1939. They shared 61 years of marriage until his passing April 8, 2001.
Mrs. Childers was a homemaker and minister's wife. She was a member of Marion Second Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Phil Childers and wife, Joanne Lenahen of Louisville, Ky.; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Kay and David Chaffee of Collinsville; three grandsons, Matthew Childers, Todd Childers and David Childers, all of Louisville, Ky.; granddaughter, Laura DuFrenne of Red Bud; sister, Almeda Sanders of Herrin; brother, Paul Meredith Kirk of Columbus, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, the Rev. W.W. Childers; sister, Ellade Satterfield; and brother, Woodrow Kirk.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Jim Donahue officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.
